왁스의 '오빠'라는 노래를 아실지 모르겠습니다. 예전엔 라디오에서 자주 나오던 노래였습니다. '오빠, 나만 바라봐'로 시작하는 구절이 중독적이어서 지금도 들으면 '아 그 노래!'하실 겁니다. 사실 '오빠'는 신디 로퍼의 노래 'She Bop'을 리메이크한 노래입니다. 신디 로퍼는 80년대를 대표하는 디바 중 하나입니다. 지금 레이디 가가처럼 알록달록한 패션으로 주목을 받은 로퍼는 지금도 노래를 발표하고 뮤지컬에 참여하는 등 활발히 활동하고 있습니다.

  신디 로퍼의 대표곡은 바로 1983년 나온 <Girls Just Want to Have Fun>입니다. 원래 로버트 하자드라는 사람의 곡을 리메이크했는데, 원곡은 가사 주인공이 남자인데 리메이크하면서 가사 주인공을 여자로 바꿨습니다. 가사는 '여자도 그냥 놀고 싶다'는 내용입니다. 여자들이 줄줄이 노는 뮤직비디오가 인상적(?)인데, 1984년 MTV 여성 아티스트 뮤직비디오 부분에서 상을 타기도 했습니다.

  피그말리온 효과라고 아시나요? 옛날 조각가 피그말리온은 자신이 사랑하는 여인의 모습을 돌로 조각했습니다. 그는 자기 조각상과 사랑에 빠지고 아프로디테는 그 사랑에 감동해 조각상을 사람으로 만들어 주었습니다. 피그말리온 효과는 기대와 관심을 받아 정말 그런 쪽으로 결과가 좋아지는 현상을 말합니다.

  1987년 영화 마네킹(Mannequin)은 현대판 피그말리온 이야기입니다. 백화점 직원 주인공이 깨어난 마네킹과 사랑에 빠진다는 로맨틱 코미디입니다. 이 영화 주제가이자 제 60회 아카데미 주제가상 후보에 오른 곡이 바로 하드 록 밴드 스타십(Starship)의 <Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now>입니다. 가사도 남한테 인정받지 못하지만 그래도 꿋꿋이 사랑하라는 메시지를 담고 있습니다.
